Route 13 North from Luang Prabang

compare Luang Prabang flights on Traveloka

Northern Laos is mountains and river valleys with one main road through it, and Route 13 out of Luang Prabang is one of the better drives in Southeast Asia provided nobody is in a hurry. Distances are short and times are long. Travellers who compare Luang Prabang flights on Traveloka and allow three or four days can loop north and come back a different way.

Nong Khiaw, four hours north

The first obvious stop: a village on the Nam Ou between limestone walls, with a bridge, a handful of guesthouses and a viewpoint an hour’s hard climb above it. The road there is paved and winding. From Nong Khiaw you can take a boat further upriver to Muang Ngoi, which has no road at all.

Muang Khua and the Nam Ou

Continuing north towards the Vietnamese border, Muang Khua is a small river town where very few visitors stop. The dams built on the Nam Ou have changed the river considerably and the boat services that used to run its length are reduced. Ask locally rather than relying on a guidebook for current boat schedules.

Phongsali, if you have the time

Ten hours from Luang Prabang at the far north, Phongsali sits at fourteen hundred metres among Akha villages and tea plantations, with a Chinese-influenced old quarter. It is cold at night and genuinely remote. The road is slow and occasionally landslipped in the wet season. This is the end of the line and the reward for getting there.

The southern alternative: Vang Vieng

Six hours south on the same Route 13, through the Phou Khoun pass, the road climbs over a mountain ridge with villages strung along the crest. Vang Vieng has outgrown its reputation and is now a karst landscape with climbing, caves and balloons rather than tubing bars. The drive itself is the best part.

Driving versus being driven

Self-drive is possible but most visitors hire a car with a driver, which costs little more and removes the problem of mountain roads, livestock and overtaking trucks on blind bends. Motorbike touring is popular and genuinely demanding; the loop north is for experienced riders with time to spare rather than a first trip.

Road conditions and the seasons

The tarmac is reasonable on Route 13 and deteriorates on the side roads. Landslides close sections during the wet season from May to October and repairs take time. November to February is dry, cool and the right window. March brings agricultural burning and the valleys fill with smoke for weeks.
